Auto burglar arrested

On May 7 at about 3:10 p.m., Fremont Police Department officers arrested John Dunbar, 20, of San Lorenzo, on charges of vehicle theft, evading a peace officer, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools and a parole violation.

The incident began when officers responded to a reported auto theft at Pathfinder Village Apartments, where the victim said she heard her car start and pull away.

Looking out the window, she saw a man in her car driving out of the complex, police said. Officers were able to locate the stolen vehicle near Mowry Avenue and Farwell Drive, and followed it onto southbound Interstate 880, police said. Officers followed the vehicle to 42744 Boscell Road, where the driver eventually stopped.

Officers searched the vehicle and found a car stereo, vice grips and "for sale" signs, police said. They determined the stereo was from another auto burglary.

Officers called the number on one "for sale" sign and learned a vehicle was stolen from the number's owner.

Dunbar was transported and booked into Fremont City Jail.

Students attacked

On May 6 at about 8:10 p.m., Fremont police responded to a fight at Fremont Adult School at 4700 Calaveras Ave.

The class teacher told officers one of his students jumped from his seat to confront two men outside, police said.

The student suffered a cut to his head and was taken to Washington Hospital for treatment. The victim was not cooperative with officers, police said.

Neighbor stops burglary

On May 4 at about 9:50 a.m., police responded to the report of a suspicious circumstance in front of a home on Beard Road.

A neighbor told officers a man had been sitting in the back seat of a vehicle in front of a vacant home on the block for about 45 minutes. The witness added the home had recently been burglarized and is for sale, police said.

The witness then called moments later to tell police the suspect had entered a back yard, carrying something he had taken from the trunk of his vehicle, police said.

Officers said they located suspect George Brace, 42, breaking into the residence. Brace was allegedly drilling out the lock on the home's back door when officers arrived, police said.

Officers searched Brace and found a methamphetamine pipe in his front pocket, police said. They also searched his car and found a stolen credit card.

Brace was arrested on charges of attempted burglary, possession of stolen property and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into Fremont City Jail.

Man stabbed in assault

On May 3 at about 1 p.m., Fremont police responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call near Thornton Avenue and Dondero Way.

The victim told officers that three men in a black Ford Expedition accosted him and his brother while yelling gang-related remarks.

The victim suffered a stab wound to his abdomen and a laceration to his forearm, and was taken to Washington Hospital for treatment.

Officers located the suspect vehicle within minutes of the incident at the Ladera Woods Apartments on Central Avenue, police said.

The victim's brother identified all three suspects.

Officers then arrested Oscar Salas, 23, Jose Fabian, 27 and Thomas Ramirez, 23, all of Fremont, on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy. The suspects were taken to Fremont City Jail.

Men attacked

On May 3 at about 11:15 p.m., Fremont police responded to the 7-Eleven at 3868 Delaware Drive on the report of an assault.

Arriving officers found the victim, a 42-year-old Fremont man, on the ground outside the store complaining of pain in his right shoulder and abrasions to his forehead and nose.

The victim told officers he had been walking south on Delaware Drive when a black four-door sedan hit him for no reason without trying to stop, police said.

A passenger in the vehicle got out and yelled something to him in Spanish. The victim got up and went to the store, and the suspects fled. The victim could only identify the suspects as four Hispanic males in a dark-colored sedan, police said.

At 11:40 p.m. the same evening, another victim was located at Montrose Avenue and Fremont Boulevard.

This victim, a 17-year-old Fremont boy, claimed six Hispanic men struck him in the head with a tire iron and took his cell phone.

The teen was taken to Washington Hospital and treated for injuries.

The suspect vehicle was described as a dark-colored Dodge Intrepid or Acura Integra.

Snowboards taken

On May 5 at about 12:20 a.m., police responded to a commercial burglary at The Station at 39169 Farwell Drive.

The business owner told officers he received a call from his alarm company and arrived on scene to find the front door pried. Officers watched surveillance tapes, which showed two men enter the business and remove several snowboards, skateboards and a computer, police said.

Burglar arrested

On May 6 at 3:47 a.m., Fremont police responded to a suspicious circumstance at Knight's Bridge Plastics Inc. located at 3080 on Osgood Court.

A driver of an Allied Waste garbage truck told officers he saw a suspicious vehicle in the rear of the business, police said.

Officers contacted the suspect, later identified as 50-year-old Richard Cruz of San Jose, and arrested him on burglary charges after finding several recyclables and a box of copper filings in his car, police said.

Cruz allegedly admitted to entering the open roll-up door to the business and removing the box of filings, police said.

Officers also determined Cruz to be under the influence. He was transported and booked into Fremont City Jail on charges of burglary and being under the influence of drugs.

$350,000 in damage from house blaze

On May 3 at 1:23 p.m., Fremont Fire Department crews were called to a house fire on the 4300 block of Vincente Drive.

Reports state the fire began in the master bedroom of the one-story home, and made its way to a bathroom. The rest of the house suffered smoke damage.

A family of four was at the home when the fire began evacuated without any serious injuries. One of the residents was checked by paramedics at the scene, but did not require medical treatment.

Reports state the fire was under control by 1:45 p.m. The cause of the fire was unknown at press time.

The blazed caused $300,000 damage to the home's structure, and $50,000 to its contents, reports state. A total of 17 Fremont firefighters responded.
